Although before the war, the Jewish community constituted almost 50% of Garwolin’s population, today there are no tangible indications of their presence – except for the Jewish cemetery in Sulbiny, located about 4 kilometers away from the town. Despite this fact, the first grade students from C. K. Norwid Catholic High School managed to organize an extremely interesting walking tour of Jewish sites for their peers. It took the form of a location-based game and was held on June 14, 2018. The game consisted of six stations where various tasks awaited the participants. The teenage organizers acquainted their schoolmates with the history of Jewish holidays, trade, the laws of kashrut, and burial traditions. They also presented the history of Makabi and Hapoel sports clubs, introduced the life stories of Paweł Lipsztat, a Jewish doctor from Garwolin, and the two Garwolin residents awarded the Righteous Among the Nations title: Mr. and Mrs. Paśniczek.
The walk participants were also offered refreshments. While preparing the project, the students benefited from the historical research conducted by a former alumnus of the school, Garwolin Yizikor Book, and interview with a witness of history, and resources of a Yahad-In Unum representative. The event was accompanied by an exhibition in the school common room. A Facebook page and a guidebook in Polish and French remain as lasting marks of the event. The participants of the project have also applied to the Garwolin Forest District for permission to mark the way leading to the Jewish cemetery in Sulbiny.
