Milówka

Milówka is a sizable village in Żywiec county, inhabited by Jews from mid-19th century up until World War II and the year 1940. There are no visible traces of Jewish presence left in Milówka, although some of the older residents still remember their Jewish neighbors.

With the support of their teachers and thanks to local oral history resources, students from the local high school planned and conducted a walking tour of Jewish Milówka for any and all interested residents. The tour not only served as a means to disseminate information, but also had its participants involved in completing various tasks and quizzes as quests; project participants prepared a dedicated map for the purposes of the tour, wrote a poem and created QR codes.

The route of the tour, published in the form of flyers and booklets, became the project’s enduring effect. The tour can now be reiterated or even conducted on one’s own, without the company of a physical guide. Materials related to the tour are now available in the local Tourist Information office.

Project participants also took part in Jewish Culture Day that outlined Jewish history, cuisine and dances alongside notes on prominent figures, not only from the region. Additionally, students took the initiative to organize a meeting with Ms. Dorota Wiewióra, head of the Jewish Community in Bielsko-Biała. They also created a short promotional video, showcasing all project activities.
