Rzeszów

Holy Queen Jadwiga High School with Bilingual Divisions No. 9

The Jewish community of Rzeszów played an important part in the city’s history. Even though today there are no Jewish residents in Rzeszów, it is easy to find visible traces of their former presence—both material traces, such as two synagogues and a cemetery, as well as symbolic and non-material ones, such as commemorative plaques, murals and stories told about the Jewish inhabitants of the city by local tour guides.

A group of students from the city’s High School No. 9 who participated in the School of Dialogue prepared and organized a walking tour in the footsteps of the Jews of Rzeszów, accompanied by a movie screening. They gathered information about the Jewish history of the city from various sources, including an interview with an eyewitness – a grandmother of one of the project partcipants, who turned out to have Jewish roots. Teachers and fellow students from their high school were the target audience of the tour.

The project included, apart from the educational walking tour, several other activities: a visit to the Ulma Family Museum in Markowa and to the Łańcut synagogue, attending a lecture at the University of Rzeszów, designing posters and leaflets promoting the tour and organizing a Jewish culture night at their school. To present the outcome of their project, the students made a collage (composed of photographs and brief testimonials of the tour participants) and exhibited it at school. They also posted information about it on the school’s website, made a video documenting the tour and created an Instagram account dedicated to the project.
