Siedlce

Holy Queen Jadwiga High School with Bilingual Divisions No. 2

Highschool students from Siedlce set up a Facebook fanpage devoted to local Jewish history, which they named „Po śladach” [Following traces] as well as conducted a walking tour through sites related to this history. The fanpage includes a virtual map with the tour’s itinerary and descriptions of all stops on the route. Students prepared for the tour in two ways. One the one hand, they collected information during School of Dialogue workshops, through their own archive searches and through conversations with their grandparents about what they knew and remembered. Students also met with a journalist who writes about local Jewish history. On the other hand, students decided to check what locals know about Jewish history and culture. The tour they organized was advertised in local press and in person during Stanisławowski fair.

The tour was long and included many stops along the way. Participants were most moved by the visit to the former ghetto area, where young tour guides recited a poem by Antoni Słonimski and lit up cemetery candles. Senior residents attending the tour shared their memories and explained why it is so important for young people to be interested in past events. Students were also able to locate what probably is the last house in Siedlce with an intact mezuzah and a plaque naming its Jewish owners (ul.Szkolna 27).
