Tuszyn
Władysław Jagiełło Primary School No. 1
| 2019 |
The history of Jews in Tuszyn, a town of 7000 inhabitants located 15 km away from Łódź, goes back to the turn of the 18th century. When the war broke out, the entire Jewish population of Tuszyn was relocated to the Piotrków Trybunalski ghetto. No material traces of their presence in the town remain.
Students of a primary school in Tuszyn prepared two walking tours of their town for their fellow students. The guiding theme of the tours was the writings of Ellen Mains, who was born in Tuszyn and left just before the war. The author had visited the school at the invitation of one the teachers before the project started. During one of the tours, the participants engaged in conversations with people living in houses built on former sites of Jewish households.
They also had the possibility to listen to stories about pre-war Tuszyn from an eyewitness, who lived in a house located close to the old synagogue, the mikveh building and the house of the rabbi.
As part of the project, the school reached out to the Jewish community in Łódź. They plan to carry out a joint initiative to create a lasting commemoration of the Jews buried at the Tuszyn cemetery.
