Zakliczyn

Zakliczyn is a small town in the Małopolskie region. Its Jewish community played an important role in the town’s history, and in 1939 the Jews accounted for half of its population. Only a few material traces of their historical presence survive, the most interesting being the Jewish war cemetery from the World War I period (the only one in Poland).

Project participants, freshmen from the Zakliczyn high school, prepared a walking tour in the form of a city game entitled ‘In the footsteps of the Jews of Zakliczyn’. The participants of the city game were a mix of freshmen from the local technical high school together with sixth and seventh graders.

As part of their preparation for the project, the students made a jigsaw puzzle and prepared traditional Jewish snacks for the participants.

The students intend to carry out further initiatives, including organizing a city game for the residents of Zakliczyn and the neighboring areas, focusing this time on the liquidation of the Zakliczyn ghetto and deportation of the Jews to the Bełżec death camp. They also plan to hold an event accompanied by a reading of the roll of honor on the Zakliczyn main square.
