School of Dialogue from Żelechów made it into a book about Polish Jews emigrating to Costa Rica, “Polacos: Chaja is Sailing to Costa Rica” by Anna Pamuła. In a chapter entitled “What’s Buried in the Ground” Pamuła describes a tour of Żelechów Jewish sites prepared by the students from the local vocational-technical school as part of the School of Dialogue program. A quote from the book illustrates the impact the School of Dialogue program has on students living in former shtetls:
“Some students complained they didn’t want to research Jewish history. ‘Why should I care?,’ they asked … But after the project was done some of them admitted that their attitude towards Jews improved,” explained Alicja Bienias, a historian involved in the program from the beginning.”
