Teaching about the Past to Ensure
    a Better Future

Last week, an event entitled “Bridges instead of Walls” took place in Brzesko. The event summarized the project of local students, who participated in the School of Dialogue in the fall semester. The students described their participation in our program as having started a domino effect, and wrote that their project is still developing. Recently they have recorded the testimony of history witness Mieczysław Dyląg, which will soon be made available in the Centralne Archiwum Tradycji Lokalnej (Central Archive of Local Tradition). Local residents have also been affected by the domino effect. And so, a lecture about modern Israeli literature took place in the Book Friend Club. Etgar Keret, who had been informed about the event, sent his greetings to the members of the Club, as well as a recording of himself reading excerpts from his book. And the Pedagogic Library organized the exhibition “Language of Stones” – a series of photographs showing the deteriorating tombstones from the Jewish cemetery in Brzesk.

The culmination of all those activities was an intergenerational meeting, organized by the students in cooperation with the Centrum Badań Edukacyjnych i Kształcenia Ustawicznego UJ (Pedagogical Library and the Center of Educational Research and Continual Education of the Jagiellonian University). After the lectures and a film presentation, it was time for personal reflections. The students shared very mature remarks about the effect of these kind of activities and the meaning of their participation in the project. We keep our fingers crossed for further activities and are excited about the meetings at tomorrow’s Gala!
