Białe Błota

Juliusz Verne Primary School

The 7th grade students from Juliusz Verne Primary School in Białe Błota have joined the School of Dialogue program in 2018. Since the Jewish community in their town was really small (with only two confirmed individuals living there in the 19th century) and left no tangible traces, the students decided to organize the “First School Veyse Blote Festival” instead of the usual walking tour of the Jewish sites. Their goal was to introduce participants to Jewish culture and tradition in Poland. The festival, which included a picnic, took place on June 13, and there were as many as 120 people in attendance.

At a number of festival stalls participants learned about, among others, the Yiddish language, Jewish cuisine (they could try challah), music and dance, costumes (from medieval to modern times), Jewish holidays, and the history of Jews in the nearby city of Bydgoszcz. Parents and school authorities supported the students in all their activities. The school also managed to secure financial assistance from sponsors – local entrepreneurs. The plan was to make the Festival a fixture in the school calendar.
