Brześć Kujawski

Władysław Łokietek Primary School No. 1

Even though the first Jews settled in Brześć Kujawski as early as the 15th century, no material traces of their presence survive. The synagogue was burned down, and at the site of the former Jewish cemetery there is a swimming pool. This, however, was not an obstacle for the students of the Władysław I Łokietek Primary School, who prepared a memory walking tour for their town’s residents. The five-stop tour took place on November 17, 2018 and included a quiz with prizes sponsored by the town hall and refreshments (Jewish snacks served with kosher coffee and tea).

The project participants presented the history of the Jewish community of Brześć Kujawski, illustrated with photos and accounts collected from the town’s elder residents. The event was welcomed with great interest by the local community, attracting an audience from Brześć and the neighboring towns, the local authorities and priests. The students filed a petition with the mayor to commemorate the Jewish community of Brześć Kujawski with a memorial stone, which will be funded and executed by a resident of Brześć.
