Gąbin

Stanisław Staszic School Complex

The beginings of Gąbin, a small town in the Płockie county, go back to the 14th century. The Jewish community played an active part in the town’s history from the 16th century until World War II. Today, few traces of the town’s Jewish past remain, including a cemetery and one house with a preserved sukkah.

Students of the Gąbin High School who participated in the School of Dialogue prepared a walking tour for sixth and seventh graders from the local primary school. During the tour, they visited preserved Jewish sites and pointed to the locations of the town’s former synagogue and mikveh which are referenced in written sources

The tour started with a welcome lecture at the school, which introduced the participants to the idea behind the project and explained several basic notions connected with Jewish culture and history. The lecture was followed by a movie screening and a cooking class with a tasting session. Students participating in the project also prepared quizzes and QR-codes for the tour, linking to websites dedicated to Jewish history and culture.

In addition, one issue of the school newspaper was dedicated to the School of Dialogue.
