Hajnówka

Marie Curie High School No. 1

As part of the School of Dialogue project, a group of first grade students from the Maria Skłodowska-Curie High School Complex organized a walking tour of Jewish sites trip for their peers, which focused on the history of the Hajnówka Jews. The event took place on October 15, 2019 and included a walk through the town streets, as well as a game specially prepared for this occasion, called “The history of the Hajnówka Jews.” Before the trip took place, the students made sure they were thoroughly prepared. The preparations included visiting the library, searching for materials on the Internet, and conducting interviews. During the walk, the students walked along Batory and Wierobiej Streets, stopping at the places where the synagogue, the house of prayer, and the school used to be located; they also stopped at the plaque commemorating the Hajnówka Jews.

The walk centered around the story of Naftali Grodzieński, a Jewish town resident who survived the Holocaust. In addition, the walk participants learned the Yiddish alphabet. The trip proved to be a valuable experience for the students – they admitted that although they knew Holocaust history, they had not been aware of how pre-war Jewish life in their town looked like.
