Narewka

Elementary School in Narewka

Jews began to settle in Narewka at the turn of the 19th century. The Jewish community at its peak amounted to roughly 90% of all residents in the village. Its history was presented by ninth graders from a local school during School of Dialogue project. Their tour of Jewish Narewka, organized on December 10, 2019, attracted almost 70 participants, including other middle school students, local residents, students of the Higher School of Public Administration in Białystok, representatives of local authorities and even one guest from Israel: principal of a partner institution and descendant of one of the town’s few Holocaust survivors. The three-hour-long walking tour included a meeting with an eyewitness (grandmother of one of the female project participants), visits to most important local Jewish heritage sites such as the cemetery and a mass grave, presentation of a model of pre-war Narewka exhibited in Tamara Sołoniewicz Gallery, and “Białystok remembers” exhibition brought to Narewka especially for this occasion.

The day’s program ended with a campfire. Project participants promoted their event with posters they themselves hanged in the town’s public spaces. They also prepared guidebooks for all participants. A film documenting their work and a photographic reportage remain as lasting outcomes of the students’ efforts.
