Służewo

Tadeusz Kościuszko Primary School

Although first Jewish settlers came to Służewo in the first half of the 18th century, the only proof testifying to their presence is a sign informing about the location of a Jewish cemetery that had been devastated during World War II. Thanks to the efforts of Thaddeus Kosciuszko Elementary School students, the sign has now been renovated and the school has become responsible for keeping what remains of the cemetery intact. These activities were all part of the School of Dialogue project, whose highlight was the Jewish walking tour organized on November 28, 2018 with three teacher-supervised teams comprised of other elementary school students competing against one another in a location-based game.

The storyline was based on personal testimony of Dawid, a Jew from Służewo, and was interspersed with information on the broader cultural and historical context. Students also prepared an album and an in-school exhibition, which are the project’s lasting outcomes.

The activities were very interesting and I learned a lot more from them than during normal lessons.

Those workshops have taught me a lot. They showed me that every human being should be treated equally, and there is a lack of equality in the world.
