The history of Wińsko, a small village in the Dolnośląskie region, goes back over 500 years. Until World War II, the local Jewish population played an important role in village life. Today its only remaining trace is a recently renovated cemetery.
Students of a primary school in Wińsko who participated in the School of Dialogue project created a tour with their parents in mind. The students prepared the route and educational content of the tour based on (among others) Wińsko 1933-1945, a book by Rita Steinhardt-Botwinick. The tour was attended by Bogodar Zielnica, the translator of the book (who spoke up on a few occassions, adding to the information presented by the students).
At the Jewish cemetery the tour participants were given a map of the necropolis with translations of inscriptions from selected tombstones, prepared by the students on the basis of Natalia Nagler-Bartczak’s MA thesis on this cemetery. The students were also helped by the local parish priest, who provided them with sound equipment.
The scenario of the tour ‘In the footsteps of the Jews of Wińsko’ was published online and serves as lasting documentation of the project. In addition, the students prepared an exhibition under the same title and displayed it at school.
