Local Authority Secondary School Complex in Krynki
| 2019 |
For many years, Jewish population comprised an important part of Krynki’s community, at its peak accounting for 90% of the local population. Two synagogues had survived intact to this day, with the remains of the third as well as Podlasie region’s largest albeit partly damaged Jewish cemetery accounting for the other Jewish heritage sites. These sites were all included in the itinerary of the walking tour organized on June 10, 2019 by students from Local Authority Secondary School Complex. Twelve guides led fellow high schoolers on a tour through locations relevant to the town’s Jewish history – aside from the afore-mentioned cemetery and synagogues, these included a market square and tanneries.
The tour included meetings with an eyewitness and a female resident of a once-Jewish house, as well as a presentation of prewar Jewish fashion, as reconstructed by female students from archival photographs. Additionally, School of Dialogue participants conducted cleanup works at the cemetery and created a film recapitulating their tour.
