Jan Twardowski Primary School No. 3

A group of students from the History Club at Jan Twardowski Primary School no. 3 in Sierpc organized a walking tour of Jewish sites as part of the School of Dialogue project. The students prepared for it thoroughly by searching for information on the Internet, using publications of the Society of Friends of the Sierpc Region and meeting with an expert in local history. Moreover, they also made sure the Jewish cemetery in Sierpc was tidied up, an efforts supported by the town community. The walk itself took place on June 28, 2018. Its participants were students and teachers from the Sierpc schools, representatives of the authorities, and of the Workshop for Documenting the History of the Town of Sierpc.

The event began with a presentation and refreshments at the school. Then, the group walked along the town streets, stopping at the historic Jewish library building, the butcher shops, the house of the painter Abraham Neumann, at the border of the former ghetto and the fish market, as well as at the site of the burned synagogue, where a moving installation depicting a firefighter who was forbidden to extinguish the fire is located. At each station, young guides told the participants about the town’s Jewish history by presenting old photographs. The teenage organizers received enthusiastic reviews from participants and are planning more events.
