Bieruń / Rymanów

Joanna Lorenc - Leader of Dialogue in Bieruń

Each year, the event has a different theme. In 2008, the theme was „We Remember”, whereas in 2016 – „Mayn shtetele Rymanov – My Town Rymanów”.
Every year since 2008, together with the Rymanów Meeting Association we organize Days of Remembrance of the Jewish Community in Rymanów. The aim is to remind current citizens of Rymanów (a town in the Podkarpacie region) about their past and the Jewish people, who for many years developed our town together, treating it as their small homeland, living together for better or worse with their Catholic neighbors. Eachyear, a differentthemeischosen for the event. The first theme was  “We remember”, while in 2016 – „MaynshteteleRymanov – My Town Rymanów”.

During the celebrations, all the participants – locals, descendants of Rymanów Jews and a growing number tourists from around the world – meditate, recall, and celebrate together. Each year as part of the remembrance days, an ecumenical mass is held at the Jewish cemetery and a March of Remembrance takes participants from Rymanów’s market square to the railway station, from which the town’s Jewish inhabitants were deported to the extermination camp in Bełżec. The final element of the joint celebrations is the Shabbat dinner, which is attended by a large number of guests. The number of participants of the Days of Remembrance keeps growing each year.
