Mariusz Sokołowski

Białystok

Grants and scholarships for Leaders of Dialogue

Led by Mariusz Sokolowski the project involves commemorating the family members of Samuel Pisar, a Białystok Holocaust survivor, on the 80th anniversary of the Białystok ghetto uprising. The commemoration involves the installation of Stolpersteine (memorial cobble stones laid on the sidewalk by the apartment they occupied before the war) dedicated to David, Helena, and Frieda Pisar, as well as Fejga and Memel Suchowolski. The Pisar family Stolpersteine will be one of only a few permanent commemorations of the Jewish community in Białystok, and are intended to remind the city’s residents of a particular family living on Dąbrowskiego Street.

Apart from the permanent commemoration, Mariusz plans to invite Białystok’s youth to participate in his “Białystok Remembers!” educational program. The educational activities will be focused on the story of Frieda Pisar, a ten-year-old Holocaust victim, whose biography will inspire participants to create an art installation of stories, letters, and drawings in honor of her memeory.

In 2023, the Leaders of Dialogue program, including grants and scholarships, is financed thanks to the generosity of Friends of the Forum, LEDOR WADOR Foundation, United States Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad and individual donors and institutions from Poland and abroad supporting Forum for Dialogue. Scholarships for personal development are possible thanks to The David and Anna Dlugie Kliger Scholarship Fund.
