The history of the Jewish community in Wysokie Mazowieckie, a town where Karol Głębocki was born and where he now works as a teacher, has still not been elaborated in a book. The subject is however important as Jews constituted almost 60% of town residents already in the second half of the 19th century. Karol Głębocki decided to take upon himself this challenge and decided to write a book about Jews from Wysokie Mazowieckie titled „Broken Neighborhood Ties: The History of Jews from Wysokie Mazowieckie”. He took the decision to use the grant awarded to him within The David and Anna Dlugie Kliger Scholarship on research and purchase of archival materials and equipment. In order to prepare the publication, a purchase of expensive scans and copies of documents from archives in Poland and the US was necessary. Thanks to the scholarship, Karol Głębocki visited The Central Archive of Historical Records in Warszawa, The State Archive in Łomża, The Diocesan Archive in Łomża and The State Archive in Białystok where he was able to conduct research for his book, as well as buy scans and copies of materials and books about Jews from Wysokie Mazowieckie, Judaism and Jewish history and culture. He spent some of the funds on a multifunctional device (printer and scanner) and a digital camera.
The equipment is used during research to print the purchased documents and to photograph the archive resources. Thanks to the scholarship, Karol Głębocki was also able to finance his trip to Berlin where he attended a seminary for teachers “National Socialism and the Holocaust in Historical And Political Education – Questions and Methodological Solutions.” His stay in Berlin provided him with many methodological guidance and broadened the information about the Holocaust in school education. Karol Głębocki claims that the scholarship allowed him to acquire many unknown, interesting documents and plans which he will use in his book. The new resources helped him to dig even deeper in the past about the history of Jews of Wysokie Mazowieckie, back to the turn of the 16th and 17th century. The purchased books allowed him to deepen his knowledge about the history and culture of Jews. He is persuaded that the scholarship brought him closer to write the book about Jews of Wysokie Mazowieckie.
The David and Anna Dlugie Kliger Scholarship is to be used towards personal development and individual work for Polish/Jewish relations.
When analyzing thousands of archival documents, I felt like a discoverer who would soon share his knowledge with others, Karol Głębocki said. I feel more motivated to work further on the subject and during the last Leaders of Dialogue Conference I had an opportunity to share my experience about the research in archives
